Microsoft built a brand new web browser for Windows 10 and it appears to have been pretty well received, Microsoft Edge has many of the features that users left Internet Explorer for however it’s still missing browser extensions. After a delay in the release of extensions support was confirmed over a month back it appears that Microsoft may soon bring browser extensions to Edge, a feature that many users have been anxiously waiting for.
Microsoft confirmed in October that it was actively working to develop a secure extension model to make the experience safe and reliable for users, it also confirmed that the feature would arrive in a future Windows 10 update that will roll out in 2016.
It was initially planned to release extensions support in the recent major Windows 10 update that was only released a few weeks back but the company decided to delay things. As we come closer to 2016 with each passing day it appears that Edge users may not have to wait for too long once the new year arrives.
A preview site apparently went live accidentally yesterday and revealed that Microsoft is gearing up to launch browser extensions for Edge pretty soon. The developer site announcing extensions support for Edge was first discovered by Twitter user WalkingCat.
Apparently the early preview will allow users to manually download and install extensions, developers will be able to create their own, or if they have one for Chrome, easily port that extension over to Edge. So far Microsoft has not provided a confirm date when extension support will be formally released.
