Microsoft recently launched the first laptop that it has ever made, called Surface Book, the laptop has actually proven to be a hit among consumers with Microsoft having to ramp up production in order to meet demand. It seems that all is well with this new product, but if you intend on purchasing one with the idea that if something goes wrong you’ll easily make a repair yourself, you better think twice. The good folks at iFixit say it’s going to be a pain to repair the Microsoft Surface Book.
If you follow tech news then chances are you’re quite familiar with iFixit, the company tears down almost every other new product and then assigns it a repairability score to let an average user know just how hard it would be for them to repair that device.
Microsoft Surface Book gets 1 out of 10, with 10 being the best, so you can imagine what the 1 stands for. The laptop has received a truly abysmal repairability score based on a number of factors.
The display assembly is incredibly difficult to remove because it’s made out of a fused glass panel and LCD. Both the processor and RAM are soldered to the motherboard, base battery is heavily glued to the shell and since many of the components are on the backs of their respective boards, any repair or replacement job requires the removal of the entire motherboard even for working on simple components.
Then again, most customers don’t take into account how easy a device will be to repair when they decide to purchase it, so it’s not like this abysmal score will dent Surface Book’s sales. It’s just going to disappoint enthusiasts a little bit.
