It seems that one can still hold out hope for System Shock 3 to hit the market in due time, but there is a reason as to why a bird in hand is worth two in the bush. After all, why bother with what could be, as opposed to what already is? Before there will be System Shock 3, thank the heavens that a remake of the original will be released beforehand, and if you still cannot wait, you can always enjoy a re-release of System Shock 2.
First of all, a little bit of background information – System Shock happens to be a cyberpunk series that has influenced a fair number of games in the modern era, with BioShock being touted to be a spiritual successor to System Shock 2. The whole point boils down to this – System Shock happens to play an important role in modern gaming history, regardless of whether one acknowledges it or not, and those who missed it right from the very beginning because they were not born yet or were too young, will soon be able to have another go at it.
Developer Night Dive claimed that they have the rights to the franchise, and will work on the original System Shock remake. It remains a mystery as to the amount of polish and updating which will be implemented in the remake, but at least it is a starting point.
