Malls and apartments due to their dense population take up a lot of energy. This is why over in Switzerland, they are looking to design what they are calling a “vertical forest”. This follows an architectural competition in which Italy’s Stefano Boeri is given the go ahead to design such a building which will rely on sustainable energy to keep it powered.
Dubbed La Tour de Cedres, as you can see in the image above, the idea behind the vertical forest to ensure that it is as green as possible. The tower is expected to rise to a height of 117m and will feature over 3,000sq m of greener. This includes 100 cedar trees, 6,000 shrubs, and 18,000 various plants, some of which are expected to be local to the area.
The building will consist of 36 floors of luxury apartments, office spaces, and a retail center, with the top floor being host to a restaurant with a panoramic view. Like we said, the building will be powered by sustainable energy and this means that it will rely on solar panels, ground source heat pumps, and also a rainwater collection system.
The concept of the La Tour de Cedres is similar to Boeri’s previous design, the Bosco Verticale so we guess this isn’t really a surprise. Construction of La Tour de Cedres is expected to begin construction come 2017.
