Street View Lets You Tour Petra, Jordan

There is something about ruins that do seem to carry a sense of mystique and intrigue. If only walls could talk, how those ancient stones in the city of Petra, Jordan, will be able to whisper and regale us with tales of yore as armies marched through its belly and traders haggled with their customers. Google’s Street View (which has been launched as a standaone app) will now allow users to check out the ancient city of Petra, which is also considered to be one of the “seventh wonder of the new world” according to the Smithsonian Magazine.

Sporting a similar size as that of the expanse of lower Manhattan, Petra’s famous monolithic, wondrous cliffs are part of the city’s landscape, where just about everything has been carved into the rock faces. These are no mere simple carvings, but boast of intricate designs, wonderful architecture and a jaw-dropping terrain to boot.

Queen Rania Al Abdullah of Jordan shared about the Street View add-ons, “Not only does it connect millions of people from all corners of the world, it provides a lens on the past. And when we understand more about each other’s stories and cultures and histories, we realize that we are more alike than we are different. That’s why we must preserve these treasures for future generations. They’re a doorway to our shared narrative.”
