The Steam controller might not be the best gaming controller of all time, far from it, in fact, but this does not mean that the Steam controller has no strengths at all. On the contrary, the Steam controller is highly customizable, so much so that one user actually put its versatility to the ultimate test – by coming up with a fully working and functional one-handed Skyrim control scheme:
A certain Chris Hepburn mapped basic look functionality to the right haptic pad, and motion controls would handle all of the movement. For instance, if you hold the right grip and tilt the controller, then your character will move in accordance to your will. Managing one’s items has been mapped to the joystick, whereas the right trigger will handle attacks and defense – through pressing and holding. The face buttons will maintain the status quo, and you can even perform an Usain Bolt sprint if one holds down the haptic pad.
This definitely goes to show how versatile the Steam controller is, and it is sure going to put a nice, big smile on the faces of the people over at Valve who have long encouraged gamers to mod the Steam controller right from the very get go.
