That being said to a certain extent Sony was telling the truth, but no one said anything about PS2 backwards compatibility, right? According to a report from Digital Foundry, it seems that they have discovered signs that Sony could be testing PS2 backwards compatibility with the PS4 via the Star Wars games that came bundled with the PS4 version of Star Wars Battlefront.
The games, Star Wars: Bounty Hunter, Star Wars: Jedi Starfighter, Star Wars Racer: Revenge, and Super Star Wars, save for one appeared to be emulated versions of the PS2 version of the game. They even noted that the console’s select and start buttons have been mapped to the side of the DualShock 4’s touchpad.
The biggest evidence was also the giant PS2 logo that appeared when the games were launched. So what gives? Is PS4 backwards compatibility coming or what? Turns out that it is, sort of. In a statement Sony made to WIRED, “We are working on utilizing PS2 emulation technology to bring PS2 games forward to the current generation. We have nothing further to comment at this point in time.”
It is unclear as to how extensive this backwards support will be, but we’ll definitely keep an eye out for more details.
