Sony CEO Denies They Are Working On Their Own Chipset

A couple of days ago it was rumored that Sony might be interested in developing their own mobile chipset. Unfortunately if you were wondering if that was true, it turns out that the rumors were false. According to reports, it seems that both Sony Mobile Taiwan’s General Manager and Sony’s CEO Kazuo Hirai have both denied the claims.

This is according to media outlets in China who in a recent interview with Hirai, asked him about the company’s plans for the future in which he stated that Sony will not be selling off their mobile division anytime soon, and that there are no plans with regards to developing their own mobile chipset, which admittedly would have been an interesting move.

However like we said before, Sony’s smartphones aren’t exactly the most popular devices in the market today. That honor goes to the likes of Samsung and Chinese OEMs like Xiaomi, so for Sony to invest in the R&D and facilities to make their own mobile chipsets doesn’t make sense, unless they were to sell it to other smartphone OEMs.

At the same time, we have seen companies like Apple, Samsung, and Huawei create their own chipsets so the idea of another smartphone OEM trying to create their own to lessen dependence on companies like Qualcomm isn’t that much of a stretch, but either way it looks like it’s a no-go for Sony for now.
