Earlier this month OnePlus launched the On-Guard insurance plan for its smartphones, the plan provides coverage against breakage such as a broken screen, damage due to the device being dropped, accidental damage and even vandalism. Initially this plan was only available to new customers in Europe, it’s has now been expanded to the United States and Canada as well.
Like its EU counterpart the On-Guard insurance plan is only available to new customers of the OnePlus 2 and the OnePlus X, customers who already own their OnePlus smartphones are out of luck, they can not purchase this additional protection for their handset. To launch this plan in the United States and Canada OnePlus has teamed up with Assurant, it’s providing three different tiers, On-Guard 12, On-Guard Plus 18 and On-Guard Plus 24.
With On-Guard 12 customers get extended service coverage that also provide replacement coverage for hardware failures due to manufacturing and workmanship defects that come in a normal usage scenario. This plan costs $20 for both the OnePlus 2 and OnePlus X in the U.S. and $25 in Canada.
On-Guard 18 and 24 provide the same extended service coverage aside from accidental damage from handling that covers accidental damage such as cracks, liquid spills and drops. Pricing of both plans differs for the OnePlus 2 and OnePlus X in the U.S. as well as Canada.
The insurance can only be purchased upon the purchase of a new OnePlus handset, it’s not able to offer a grace period for second chance enrollment, though the company is “working hard” with Assurant to offer this service in the future.
