However according to the company, this will be the last time that they will report World of Warcraft subscription figures. This was confirmed by Activision’s chief financial officer Dennis Durkin who said, “Note that this is the last quarter that we plan to provide the subscriber number as there are other metrics that are better indicators of the overall Blizzard business performance.”
Like we said, World of Warcraft is one of Blizzard’s cash cows. The game is more than a decade old but there are still millions who are paying every month to subscribe to it and to play it. The game hit its peak of 12 million subscribers in October 2010 which is ahead of the game’s third expansion, Cataclysm.
Blizzard came pretty close to the good old days last year when Warlords of Draenor was launched. That saw subscription numbers rocket past the 10 million mark, but it looks like about a year later, those numbers came crashing pretty fast. In any case we are curious as to how many players Legion (the game’s upcoming expansion) will bring, and also how many new players the Warcraft movie might inspire to come and play the game, but we suppose we will never know.
