President John F. Kennedy was the 35th President of the United States and it has been more than half a century ago when he was assassinated. Despite it being so long ago, the case still holds a lot of mystery and conspiracy as well as interest to people from all walks of life. In fact recently it seems that the license plate of the limo that was carrying Kennedy when he was assassinated was auctioned off.
How much, you ask? We know that custom license plates can get pretty expensive, especially for those who have a bit of a vanity streak in them, but it seems that this limo’s plate could have cost much more. The starting bid was set at $40,000 and was ultimately sold for a whopping $100,000 when it was all said and done, thanks to furious bidding that was done online.
The plates originally belonged to Willard Hess who owned the company that refurbished the limo after the assassination. According to Heritage consignment director Don Ackerman, whose company helped facilitate the auction, “These are the plates that were on Kennedy’s limousine. Sometimes you can’t know 100% for sure; in this case, we do know 100% for sure.” It also seems that the plates were originally discarded by an FBI agent who saw that they were expiring and didn’t think much of it.
According to Ackerman, “These plates were about to expire, so the FBI agent (overseeing the work) took the plates, installed them on the new car, and threw out the old plates, and Mr. Hess got them out of the garbage. He wanted to keep them as a souvenir for his files. He asked the agent, ‘Is it all right if I take these?’ The agent said, ‘What do you want them for?’ He said, ‘I’d like to have them for my files.’ The guy said, ‘Fine. Go ahead and take them.'”
