If there is one advantage that Google Now and their voice search has over other features offered by other platforms, it is that it tends to understand the user better, even though a recent study did find that Apple’s Siri came out on top. That being said if you do enjoy using Google’s voice search, the feature has just gotten a lot smarter.
In a post on Google’s Inside Search blog, the company has announced that their voice search feature has gotten an upgrade and will now be smarter. Smarter how, you ask? Basically the feature will now be able to understand and parse more complex questions. So instead of being able to only understand simple queries like “Who is the current US President?”, it can now understand queries like the one in the picture above.
According to Google, “We can now break down a query to understand the semantics of each piece so we can get at the intent behind the entire question. That lets us traverse the Knowledge Graph much more reliably to find the right facts and compose a useful answer. And we can build on this base to answer harder questions.”
However Google admits that there will still be hiccups every now and then, but this is something that they are actively working on, but for the most part being able to ask Google questions in a more natural way will no doubt help give it a leg up over the competition. If you’d like to take it for a spin, the update Google app on iOS and Android is currently rolling out to users.
