Virtual reality is technology for everyone, which is why Google has recently announced that they would be expanding their Expeditions Pioneer Program. For those unfamiliar, basically this is an initiative by Google in which it will see the company introduce virtual reality technology to schools around the world.
According to Google, “Expeditions is a virtual reality platform built for the classroom. We worked with teachers and content partners from around the world to create more than 100 engaging journeys – making it easy to immerse students in entirely new experiences.” With the announcement of the expansion, Google has revealed that they will now be expanding the program to 15 new cities, some of which are in international markets.
The company did not state exactly how many schools would be participating, but it’s still a good effort nonetheless. The places in the US expected to be part of it include Alexandria, Baltimore, Cincinnati, Detroit, Indianapolis, Las Vegas, New Orleans, Orlando, Phoenix, Portland, Salt Lake City, and Washington D.C. It will also be expanding to other countries which for now will include Denmark, Singapore, and Canada.
Partnering with Subaru, Google’s Expedition kit will include ASUS smartphones, a tablet for the teacher, a router, and viewers that help turn smartphones into virtual reality kits, like Google Cardboard. Google’s Expeditions program was launched not too long ago so it’s good to see Google expanding the program this quickly.
