FreedomPop Looks To Wi-Fi First Smartphone
FreedomPop is a hybrid carrier, where their users will be able to make use of Wi-Fi hotspots in the vicinity not only for data purposes, but also for voice as well, and this goes a long way in helping those of us who are operating on a rather tight budget to save plenty of dough along the way where a monthly voice, text and data plan is concerned. Whenever one is no longer within range of a hotspot, such a MVNOs will then rely on their cellular partners in order to carry the torch. FreedomPop intends to take things further this time around with their recent deal with Intel, where the latter will assist FreedomPop in developing a Wi-Fi first smartphone.
This new smartphone will make use of Intel’s low-priced “SoFIA” Atom x3 processors, and the new FreedomPop handset will initially look for a Wi-Fi signal for calls, texts and data. Should there be none of the mentioned in the vicinity, it is time to call the cavalry in, making a switchover to a cellular signal in a seamless manner – fingers crossed.
FreedomPop touts to own the largest “aggregated” Wi-Fi network around in the US, where it will cost a mere $5. Subscribers will be spoilt for choice when it comes to data plans, and some of the smartphones on sale would include the LG Volt, HTC Desire 510, Samsung Galaxy S4 and the Apple iPhone 5.
