When the term “hack” is used, sometimes it carries negative connotations which is why sometimes when you think about hacking your own phone, computer, or a piece of hardware you own, one has to wonder about the legalities of such an act. Now for those of you guys who love hacking your own router, you can rest assured that you aren’t committing any crimes.
In a blog post on the FCC’s website (via BetaNews), it has been cleared up by the FCC’s Julius Knapp that hacking your own router is considered legal. Prior to this, there was some confusion regarding the legality of hacking the router’s firmware but according to Knapp, it is completely legal as long as the hack does not result in modifying the router that would make it illegal.
According to Knapp, “The purpose of this rule is to prevent modifications to the software that could, for example, disable dynamic frequency selection (technology necessary for preventing interference to radars), enable tuning to unauthorized frequencies, increase power above authorized levels, etc.”
Knapp adds, “The rule is not intended to prevent or inhibit modification of any other software or firmware in the device, such as software modifications to improve performance, configure RF networks or improve cybersecurity.” So for all you DIY-ers, hobbyists, and hackers, you can continue your hack.
