EPA Uncovers Defeat Device In Other VW TDI Engines

It looks like Volkswagen is about to be mired in even more trouble than ever before, as the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has recently come up with a slew of new allegations against the beleaguered vehicle manufacturer, citing that the emissions defeat software or defeat device has been uncovered in the 3.0-liter TDI V6 diesel engines as well. This is a totally different engine compared to the shamed 2.0 TDI engine that is an emissions cheater. Apart from that, the EPA has also thrown Audi and Porsche into the same boat, since this non-compliant engine has been also seen action in vehicles from the other two manufacturers, citing model years 2014 through 2016.

According to the EPA, the vehicles that have been fitted with the 3.0 TDI engine will be able to figure out just when they are undergoing an emissions test, allowing the on-board computers to make a switch into a mode that was specially designed to pass the stringent requirements that have been set by the United States where diesel exhaust is concerned. The rides sold Stateside that will feature the 3.0-liter TDI V6 diesel engines include the 2014 VW Touareg, 2015 Porsche Cayenne, and 2016 Audi A6, A7, A8L and Q5.

The EPA has an estimate of approximately 10,000 vehicles that are on the road at the moment that will carry this second defeat device, in addition to an unknown quantity of 2016 models that could be on dealer lots or have already been purchased. It looks like things are getting from bad to worse for Volkswagen.
