Sometimes one of the limitations of a smartwatch is that it relies too much on your phone for connectivity. If you wanted a more “independent” smartwatch that had its own connectivity, then you might be pleased to learn that the folks behind the BLOCKS smartwatch have recently teamed up with AT&T.
Basically with this agreement, AT&T will be providing the cellular connection for the smartwatch, thus allowing the watch to go online by itself without needing a smartphone to be there for connectivity. According to Chris Penrose, Senior Vice President of Internet of Things (IoT) Solutions Organization, AT&T Mobility, “A dedicated wireless connection allows people to enjoy the full features of their wearable, independent of a smartphone, providing the ultimate freedom and flexibility.”
For those hearing about the BLOCKS smartwatch for the first time, this is a smartwatch that was launched on Kickstarter. What makes the watch so special and unique is the fact that it is modular, meaning that users can swap components in and out depending on their needs. This is versus current designs in which the features are more or less set in stone.
One of the features was also a SIM card module and now we guess we know who will be powering the watch’s connectivity. The watch is still up on Kickstarter with 8 days to go, so if you’d like to back it, head on over to its website for the details.
