The big deal is that this bike bridge will be something of an architectural wonder, and a nightmare for those who suffer from a fear of heights. As you can see in the renderings, this bike bridge will suspended from a dizzying height of 213 feet above the waters below it and will be in between two skyscrapers.
This bridge was designed by architect Stephen Holl back in 2008 but was put on hold due to economic troubles, but it has since been revived and construction is expected to begin in 2016. So what’s with the crazy design? Aren’t there better solutions? Not really because according Mikael Colville-Andersen of the Copenhagenize blog, the law is such that no home can be more than 500 meters away from public transport.
Since there is a body of water separating the skyscrapers, making a detour would result in a 2.2km ride which is obviously very inefficient. The need for the bridge to be so high up is also because it needs to accommodate ships coming in and out of the port.
