While drone delivery services from the likes of Amazon and other retailers have yet to fully take off, it seems that within the post industry, drones deliveries are starting to catch on. In fact according to the latest reports, it seems that over in Australia the company’s postal service, Australia Post, will start using drones to make parcel deliveries across the country.
This service won’t be taking off immediately but it is expected to go into service within a year. The reports claim that the drones used to make said deliveries will be similar to the quadcopters that Amazon is currently trialing. Speaking to the Australian Financial Review, Australia Post’s CEO Ahmed Fahour said that these drones have already begun its test deliveries.
“We’ve been talking to a major customer, an e-tailer, who would like to particularly deliver to regional and rural communities. How do you get the parcel they’ve bought [from the] street to their home? We’re focused on convenience. So we’re going to trial in 2016 with a major customer.”
The drones can hold parcels weighing as much as 2kg. Australia Post isn’t the first in the world to test such delivery methods. Around the world we have seen similar attempts by the Swiss Post, Singapore Post, and GeoPost over in France.
