YouTube is expected to launch a subscription service soon and one of the biggest benefits that subscribers are going to get will be a completely ad-free experience, for many that will be worth the price of admission alone. However according to a new report YouTube is investing is some new content created in collaboration with some of the top content creators on the site, and it’s going to secure that content behind a paywall, meaning that you won’t be able to watch those videos unless you pay.
Popular content creators on YouTube have millions of subscribers and fans, it goes without saying that a percentage of them will follow their favorite creators beyond the paywall. This collaborative effort will allow YouTube to get more people to pay for the premium service and by offering them exclusive content it adds more value to the entire proposition.
Re/code reports that YouTube is going to reveal details about the programming it’s going to offer as part of the subscription service at an event on October 21st which will take place at its studio in Los Angeles.
This is going to be a major shift for the world’s largest online video hosting website that has remained free for as long as most of us can remember, YouTube has already said that the new subscription service will coexist with its free ad-supported service, so it’s going to be business as usual for people who don’t want to pay, if they don’t mind putting up with ads and not getting access to some exclusive programming.
