According to an announcement made by Google on the Google Drive Blog, “So starting today, WhatsApp for Android lets you create a private backup of your chat history, voice messages, photos, and videos in Google Drive. And once you do, you can restore everything on a new device with just a couple taps.”
Users will need a valid Google account but given this is for Android, you should already have one setup. As for iOS users, given that iOS relies on iCloud, there does not seem to be any plans to include Google Drive backup for the iOS version of WhatsApp for now. We suppose this makes sense given the proprietary cloud services of each platform, but we suppose there are some iOS users who might prefer Google Drive to iCloud.
Now if you don’t notice the feature right away, fret not. According to Google, this update is expected to roll out to users over the course of the next few months so if you don’t see it now, don’t worry because eventually it will make its way onto your device.
