It has been a long time since Waze got a major update and today it’s finally getting one even though it’s only available for iOS right now. This is the first update of its kind after Waze, a popular app that uses crowdsourced data to warn users of accidents up ahead, was acquired by Google more than two years back. Goes to show that Waze hasn’t forgotten that it does have an app which needs to be updated time and again.

Waze version 4.0 brings a completely new user interface which focuses on “higher visibility and clarity,” while keeping the colorful appearance that many users have come to know and love.

The app even gets the ability to warn users about certain accidents on the road even before they get inside the car, the “smart calendar” feature will tell users when a road accident is likely to have an effect on their day’s schedule.

There’s a new ETA panel in the app which displays when the user will arrive, provides alternative routes, lets users add stops on the way and even share their ETA with friends. All of these options are just one tap away. The map design has been updated as well, it’s now easier to read and alerts are more permanent, enabling users to easily check them at a glance.

Waze is available as a free download still, the new update is live now for iOS and the company says that the Android version will be out soon as well.
