If you’re on a grandfathered unlimited data plan from Verizon, a plan that the carrier stopped offering to new customers back in 2011, you’re going to see an extra $20 on your bill real soon. Verizon has announced that subscribers on the aforementioned data plan are going to get a $20 price increase, customers not currently on contract will see the first increase in their bill after November 15th, but a small minority that still remains on contract won’t see the price increase until the contract expires.
Customers on Verizon’s grandfathered unlimited data plans were previously paying $30 per month for this privilege and now they’ll start paying $50 from November 15th. Add voice calling and texting to the mix and customers can see their bills easily cross $100.
This is yet another attempt on Verizon’s part to gradually move customers off the unlimited data plans that it no longer offers, instead there are multiple tiered data plans that provide a data allocation which obviously limits usage.
Then again majority of the carrier’s subscribers is already on tiered plans, Verizon itself says that subscribers on grandfathered unlimited data plans account for less than one percent of its subscriber base.
Verizon did clarify though that this price increase won’t affect business and government customers who can get unlimited data plans from the nation’s largest mobile carrier.
