With Valve’s Steam platform being extremely popular with many gamers who play online games and who purchase games, it’s safe to say that the platform has many eyeballs on it. This means that placing ads on Steam makes sense and would no doubt generate a ton of new revenue for the company.

However if you’re worried that Valve will soon start littering Steam with unnecessary ads, you can rest assured that will not be happening anytime soon, or ever. According to Valve’s Erik Johnson who spoke to the folks at GameSpot, he thinks that addings ads to Steam is a bad business decision in the long run.

According to Johnson, “We don’t see a case for that ever getting user value, so we wouldn’t do it. I don’t think that those ever work, either. To take it a step further, I don’t think anybody buys Doritos as a result of that.” So there you have it, while other platforms are turning to ads to help monetize it, we suppose Valve will not be leveraging their userbase in order to do so.

However Johnson does admit that there are short-term gains to be had from selling ads, but stated that the company prefers focusing on long-term relationships, with ads creating negative value in the eyes of the consumer.
