The Nexus 6P features a metal body. The first of any Nexus phone which is actually a pretty big deal as it does lend a premium feel to it. The phone also features a Gorilla Glass 4 display, meaning that it should be pretty tough. However it seems that in a video published on YouTube by JerryRigEverything, perhaps it isn’t as tough as we’d expect.
As you can see in the video above, the phone was put through some scratch tests, and it seems that using tips from the Mohs scale of mineral hardness, faint marks became apparent at level 6 and became very visible at level 7. In fact it seems that the glass was brittle enough where upon touch the screen after, it caused it to crack which was actually very surprising.
The test also included a burn test which involved putting a lighter to the display. According to JerryRigEverything, previous phones had their screens turn black when heat was applied, but the Nexus 6P turned white which unfortunately did not go away even after a while. Last but not least, he also conducted a bend test in which the phone pretty much gave way with some pressure applied to it.
Now this isn’t the most scientific of tests but it is pretty telling. So what does this mean for the end user? Basically you should probably do your best to keep the phone in good condition if you don’t want it to scratch or bend. That being said, this is only one test and so far there haven’t been other reports of the phone being of inferior quality, so maybe take the phone for a spin in a store if you can to come to your own conclusions.
