Google Cardboard is a very cheap virtual reality solution that Google came up with over a year ago, since then this program has been expanded to cover the education sector as well. The company has now teamed up with The New York Times on a new virtual reality project, the scribe is going to ship over one million Cardboard units for home delivery to subscribers with their copy of The New York Times for the weekend of November 7th.
Those who are subscribed to the digital version of The New York Times or subscribe to Times Insider need not worry, they will get promotional codes which can be redeemed online for a free Google Cardboard unit. This means that the Times will essentially be giving up this virtual reality solution to all of its subscribers.
Speaking about the new project Dean Baquet, executive editor at NYT said “Our readers look to The Times for innovative and powerful storytelling and this is The Times at its best. Our Magazine team has created the first critical, serious piece of journalism using virtual reality, to shed light on one of the most dire humanitarian crises of our lifetime,”
The project, called NYT VR, is going to provide content as well. The debut NYT VR film is titled “The Displaced” and it “captures the resilience of three extraordinary children uprooted by war” in virtual reality. The film has been created by The New York Times in collaboration with Chris Milk and Vrse, his virtual reality company.
Content will be distributed via the NYT VR app which is compatible with both iOS and Android, the app will be available for free starting November 5th.
