Streaming is one of the most widely used methods of consuming content these days, it’s easier than having to carry around DVDs or external hard drives filled with content, just fire up the app and start streaming whatever it is you want to watch. A new trailer was recently released for the new Star Wars movie, fans will be excited to find out that Netflix will stream Star Wars: The Force Awakens, but there’s a rather unexpected caveat to that.
Variety is reporting that Netflix is going to stream Star Wars: The Force Awakens only in Canada come 2016, it won’t be able to stream the movie in the United States due to the exclusivity agreement that Disney has with Starz, the agreement covers Disney movies released through to the end of this year. The new Star Wars movie comes out less than a fortnight before December 31st, 2015.
What this means is that people in the United States who want to stream the new movie will have to purchase a subscription to Starz if they don’t already have one. The Force Awakens will arrive on Netflix some eight months after its theatrical run is over, Netflix tells the scribe.
Disney and Netflix have signed a deal to stream movies in the United States but that only covers movies released from 2016 onwards, so one can expect Episode 8 and Episode 9 which are expected to come out in 2017 and 2019 to arrive on Netflix in the United States.
