The Back to the Future film series has a very loyal fan following even to this day and if you’ve seen Back to the Future II you’ll be well aware that one of the main characters, Marty McFly, travels forward in time 30 years to October 21st, 2015. That’s present day, tomorrow and because of that Wednesday is officially Back to the Future Day. To commemorate that ridesharing service Lyft has decided to offer free rides in the DeLorean, a car as popular as the film series itself.
Lyft has teamed up with Verizon for this purpose, it will be providing free DeLorean rides around New York City. Users can request a ride in McFly Mode tomorrow for a chance to get picked up in a DeLorean, if they do get picked up they can take a free ride of up to 15 minutes.
“Don’t worry — these DeLoreans aren’t equipped with Flux Capacitors, so where you’re going, we still need roads,” Lyft writes on its blog, just to make it clear that these rides won’t take you three decades in the future.
For those who are unaware the DeLorean DMC-12 was manufactured by DeLorean Motor Company from 1981 to 1983, the car has a brushed stainless steel body and gull-wing doors which lend it a rather unique look. It gained global appeal ever since appearing in the franchise.
Users can access the McFly Mode in the Lyft app on Wednesday, October 21st, 2015 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. in Manhattan, New York City.
