If there is one thing that Microsoft seems to like doing is going against the grain. For example with the announcement of the HoloLens, Microsoft seems to be defying industry expectations that virtual reality is the next big thing. Now thanks to a new leaked render of the Lumia 950, Microsoft seems to be going against fingerprint scanning technology as well.
The latest Lumia 950 render is courtesy of @evleaks and it seems to match up nicely with a recent leak spotted on Microsoft’s own website. However in this case, the render is of a much higher resolution and thanks to that higher resolution, an iris scanner has been spotted at the top of the device.
Now usually on the front of the phone we can expect a camera and an ambient light sensor. Sometimes there might be a front-facing flash unit, but in this case it does not appear to be it, leading some to speculate that this could be the iris scanner feature of the phone. As the name implies, this will scan your iris to ensure that it is you before letting you unlock the phone.
This is versus iPhones and Android phones, most of which seem to be adopting the fingerprint route. However given that Windows 10 does support iris scanning, we suppose it shouldn’t come as a surprise that Windows 10 Mobile would too.
