LG Found To Be Top OEM For Issuing Android Security Patches

When it comes to choosing a smartphone brand, there are many things to take into consideration. Of course the obvious ones would be things like price, hardware specs and features, and design. However there are also other things to consider like its ecosystem and after sales service.

What this means is that once you buy the phone, can you rely on the company to keep you updated for a foreseeable future? Recently researchers at the University of Cambridge have published a paper that basically gives scores to handset OEMs on how often they issue security patches for their phones.

It turns out that if you want a reliable Android OEM, LG would be the one to turn to. The company has scored a 4.0 and is followed by Motorola with 3.1, Samsung at 2.7, Sony at 2.5, and HTC at 2.5 as well. Google’s Nexus handsets on the other hand are ranked pretty high with scores of 5.2, but then again Nexus devices get their updates straight from the source so that’s to be expected.

HTC’s score of 2.5 isn’t that surprising either when you consider that last week, the company stated that they couldn’t promise monthly device updates as it would not be realistic. So there you have it, if you want a smartphone brand that you can rely on to keep you updated, based on the research LG would be the brand to turn to.
