As you can see in the screenshot above, it is the eye emoji. As noted by Wired and Jeremy Burge (via 9to5Mac), that particular emoji was actually created in support of an anti-bullying campaign called “I Am A Witness”. Basically the campaign is about encouraging teens to speak up whenever they encounter bullying or are a victim of it themselves.
According to Hanna Wittmark, the art director at Goodby, “Me and Angie were talking about how we could empower kids to go from passive to active. We wanted to help them stand up and do something.” She goes on to add, “It’s a powerful symbol. It says ‘I see this, and I’m speaking up. I’m doing something about it.’”
Through the inclusion of the eye emoji, Apple has basically thrown their support behind anti-bullying campaigns. The Cupertino company isn’t the first nor are they alone in this either. Other companies such as Facebook, Snapchat, Twitter, Tumblr, and Google have all shown their support for the I Am A Witness program.
