Back in September, we shared an interesting gadget by the name of Glowforge. For those unfamiliar, Glowforge is a 3D laser printer that lets you create 3D objects using existing materials, and also cutting it to the way you like in a precise manner. In a way its concept, which is creating 3D objects, is similar to 3D printers but its execution is different.
That being said, it looks like the project was a resounding success because according to the company, it seems that they have managed to raise a whopping $27.9 million in 30 days ever since it launched its crowdfunding scheme. Prior to this, other successful crowdfunded projects such as Pebble Time managed to raise over $20 million, so safe to say there was a lot of interest for the Glowforge.
Now just in case you’re unfamiliar, the Glowforge is a 3D laser printer. Basically how it works is you pick a design, put in your desired material like cardboard for example, and the laser will then cut out the shape that you want. Its creators claim that its accuracy is almost spot on, so creating objects that connect to each other would be possible.
It can even be used to etch on metal, as you can see in the video above where you can actually etch custom engravings and designs onto the MacBook. According to the company’s CEO Dan Shapiro, “We had no idea people would be this excited. Now, with the campaign just about over, the only thing that matters to us is delighting our customers with a product that’s even better than they were expecting, as quickly as we can.”
