Yesterday Verizon officially launched the Droid Turbo 2 and Droid Maxx 2, two new Motorola-made handsets that are exclusive to Verizon in the United States. Droid Turbo 2 is the flagship and it comes with a new technology that Motorola is calling ShatterShield, it guarantees that the display will not break or crack over and beyond the duration of the smartphone’s life (four years). Motorola has said that its future flagship smartphones will also come with the ShatterShield technology.
A ShatterShield display is made up of five layers fashioned from materials that absorb shock on impact. Motorola says that these materials won’t crack or shatter and will also maintain touch performance and structural integrity over the smartphone’s life.
The Droid lineup might be exclusive to Verizon but ShatterShield belongs entirely to Motorola so there’s nothing stopping the company of bringing it to other flagship smartphones.
In an interview Motorola President Rick Osterloh confirmed that the company does have plans to bring ShatterShield to Motorola’s other smartphones. However since the implementation of this technology drives the price up customers should only expect to see ShatterShield in flagship models.
Given that Motorola isn’t due to launch a flagship smartphone until next year it’s safe to say that we won’t see ShatterShield on a Motorola flagship until well into 2016.
