Samsung’s Exynos chipsets are a force to be reckoned with, as we have seen earlier this year when it made its way exclusively into the Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge. For the most part, the Exynos series has held its own. However when it comes to the GPUs found in the chipset, this is where Samsung has to outsource.
We have seen the likes of PowerVR and Mali being used in the Exynos which is fine given how well Samsung’s phones run, but according to a rumored roadmap, it seems that Samsung could be considering making their own GPUs in the future. How soon will that be? Unfortunately if you were hoping to see a Samsung-made GPU in the Galaxy S7 in 2016, you might be disappointed.
The roadmap hints that Samsung will most likely be integrating its own GPUs into the Exynos lineup by either 2017 or 2018. However prior to this, Samsung is expected to employ a Heterogeneous System Architecture to its chipsets. What this means is that both the CPU and GPU will exist on the same bus, allowing them to share both memory and tasks, resulting in improved performance and efficiency.
Take it with a grain of salt for now as Samsung has yet to officially confirm the roadmap, but at the same time we guess we shouldn’t be too surprised if that’s the direction that Samsung is ultimately aiming for.
