DIY Project Turns Your Android Tablet Into A Smart Mirror

Have you ever wished that your mirror could do more than reflect your image? Wouldn’t it be nice to be able to wake up and look in the mirror and have it tell you all kinds of important and relevant information? Like the weather, reminders, notifications, the news, and so on? If that’s what you’re after, there’s a DIY solution out there that might be worth trying.

The folks at Adafruit have recently put together a video that shows how with an app called HomeMirror (developed by Hannah Mitt), you can actually create a smart mirror for yourself using an existing Android tablet. There are some materials that you will need to purchase, like a plastic 2-way mirror, double-sided tape, velcro tape, black construction paper, packing tape, scissors, and a long-enough USB cable.

If you have most of those at home already, then your costs should be minimal, but even if it isn’t, we reckon it would still be a lot cheaper than buying some of the existing smart mirrors that are in the market today. Basically the idea is simple: have the Android tablet and its app run behind the mirror, in which all kinds of information can be displayed.
