When it comes to headphones, Apple has their own range, one of which is bundled with the purchase of iPhones. While Beats is technically owned by Apple, there is some suggestion that Apple could still be interested in creating their own line of headphones. This is thanks to a recent trademark filing for the “AirPods” name.
According to the folks at MacRumors, they claim that based on the evidence they’ve found so far that the trademark could have been filed by Apple using a dummy corporation. This is based on the countries the trademark has been filed in, the email used for contact information, and the use of the services of law firms that Apple themselves have used for similar filings in the past.
That and the fact that Apple’s own headphones are called EarPods makes the “AirPods” name logical, unless of course some other company out there is trying to bank on the EarPods name with their own creation. The trademark filing also mentions that while the AirPods are considered to be headphones/earphones, that they are also “wireless communication devices for voice”.
This has lent itself to the speculation that not only are the AirPods a trademark filed by Apple, but that they could be the wireless version of the EarPods. All of this is circumstantial at this point so for all we know, it might not have anything to do with Apple at all, but at the same time how does the idea of wireless EarPods sound to you?
