The division will be run by Steve Bornstein, whom for those unfamiliar used to be the CEO of ESPN and the NFL Network. Bornstein will be the chairman of said division, and it will also see Mike Sepso, who co-founded Major League Gaming, as its vice president. This new division will sit alongside Activision and Blizzard, essentially acting as the third subsidiary for Activision Blizzard.
According to Bornstein, “I believe esports will rival the biggest traditional sports leagues in terms of future opportunities, and between advertising, ticket sales, licensing, sponsorships and merchandising, there are tremendous growth areas for this nascent industry. I’m excited to help Activision Blizzard further its leadership position in this exciting growth area.”
It is unclear as to what the long-term plans for this new division are. Like we said, the company has a host of competitive titles under its belt, like Hearthstone, StarCraft 2, Heroes of the Storm, and Call of Duty World League, so it is unclear if this new division will just help support these games or if the company could launch a new league of their own. More details are expected to be revealed in the near future.
