Unless you are an amputee, we really have no idea what it would be like to lose an arm. Making it even worse is when you are young and you just can’t comprehend what is going on. However to help make the process a bit more bearable, Open Bionics has recently announced that they will be 3D printing prosthetic hands featuring popular characters from Star Wars, Marvel, and Disney.
As you can see in the image above, some examples that they have chosen include the hands of Iron Man, the sparkly gloves of Elsa from the Frozen animated movie, and one more from the Star Wars franchise. However these hands won’t actually be able to fire of laser beams or give incredible strength (or magical powers for that matter), but hopefully it will help kids see the silver lining in their tragedy.
That being said, there will be some gimmicks to make it even cooler. For example the Iron Man hand comes with built-in LEDs and a vibration motor. This is meant to simulate the firing of a rocket like what Iron Man does. Open Bionics is part of Disney’s Accelerator program, with the company granting royalty-free licenses that allows the company to 3D print these designs with no additional cost.
Disney has also loaned them their creative teams to help provide input and direction in terms of designing these prosthetics. Pretty cool, huh?
