In the time it has taken for companies like Oculus and Sony to provide updates about the status of their virtual reality headsets Samsung has released two generations of its Gear VR headsets, though to be fair to the aforementioned companies they’re trying to do something completely different from what the Gear VR does in terms of providing a virtual reality experience. Though if a new report is to be believed, Samsung might be mulling over the possibility of going down the same road as them itself.
A report out of Korea claims that Samsung is going to make a substantial move in the VR market next year by introducing a new headset that doesn’t require a smartphone to function.
Both the original and the second-gen Gear VR headset require a supported Galaxy smartphone since all of the computing power and even the display comes from the device.
The report doesn’t offer much details about this purported new effort from Samsung but if one were to speculate this would mean that Samsung will probably launch a VR headset that’s completely self-contained, meaning that it will have the necessary hardware onboard.
A self-contained VR headset can become more mainstream since it won’t require people to buy a supported Galaxy smartphone first prior to picking up the headset, and it could potentially be yet another platform on which Samsung decides to use the nascent Tizen platform.
