Last week Capcom announced Resident Evil: Umbrella Corps. This is an upcoming third-person shooter game that is based on the Resident Evil universe, but instead of pitting players against zombies and other monsters, the game will focus on 3vs team deathmatches, although there will be the occasional zombie/monster thrown into the mix.
So that’s the general gist of the gameplay, but is there a story to the game or are we expected to just dive right into it? The good news is that if you wanted a bit more backstory, you’re in luck as the game’s producers Masachika Kawata and James Vance have since come forward with additional information in an interview with GameSpot.
In terms of where and when Umbrella Corps takes place, Kawata revealed that it is set after the events of Resident Evil 6. “Umbrella Corps is set in the present day of Resident Evil, which means it’s after the events of Resident Evil 6. It’s almost in an ironic way that we’re using the title Umbrella Corps. If you know your Resident Evil lore, Umbrella no longer exists at this time in the universe; it’s been destroyed. There’s definitely a kind of a background of the Resident Evil universe that forms the basis of the game’s premise.”
The producers went on to state that unlike other shooters that have introduced a leveling system, that won’t happen with Umbrella Corps. However they noted that gamers can gain points that will instead be used towards customizable options. Resident Evil: Umbrella Corps is pegged for a release in 2016 and will be released on the PC and PlayStation 4.
