Do you hang around war zones often and wouldn’t mind a bit of luxury amid flying bullets and explosions? Range Rover has just the SUV for you. Now Bentley may claim to have made the fastest SUV in the world but Range Rover appears to have made the most secure. It’s called the Range Rover Sentinel and considering what it offers, the SUV makes conventional armored vehicles look rather pedestrian.
Range Rover Sentinel is based on the basic Range Rover Autobiography with copious amounts of armor-plating. It’s six-piece high strength steel passenger cell and multi-laminated tinted glass won’t let 7.62mm shells through, it can even laugh off a lateral explosion from 33 pounds of TNT. Even if someone chucks a German DM51 hand grenade over or under the Sentinel the SUV will keep chugging along happily.
According to Range Rover despite all of the weight added by the steel cage, bulletproof glass and armor the Sentinel’s payload capacity is over 1,400 pounds. To adjust for the added weight it has improved Dynamic Stability Control and Ride Stability Control for improved handling with a 3.0-liter supercharged V6 engine under the hood.
Other safety features include a self-sealing fuel tank, run-flat tires, spare battery and a tamper-proof exhaust. There’s even an escape system behind the rear system in the event that the passengers can’t use the doors to exit.
This level of protection comes at a price, the Range Rover Sentinel costs almost $450,000, then again if you’re the kind of person who needs to worry about making it from one place or other without getting bombed you probably have this kind of money to burn.
