Ever since the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One were released back in 2013 Sony hasn’t had to cut the price of its console, at least in the West, in order to move units. Its console has actually outperformed the Xbox One in major markets which is primarily why Microsoft had to cut the price of its console multiple times. However Xbox chief Phil Spencer expects Sony to cut PS4 price over the coming holiday season.
It’s not like Sony hasn’t had to cut prices elsewhere to move units, we’ve seen the company discount the PlayStation 4 in markets across Asia including Japan.
Phil Spencer believes that Sony is going to go down the same road in the West come the holiday season, pointing out the fact that Sony has used that same strategy before, so it’s likely that it’ll do the same this time around as well.
“I fully expect they [PlayStation] will drop price. When I think about the playbook they’ve used in the past, we feel good about the plans we have in place going forward in the holiday. If history tells, then we’ll see a price drop from them coming,” Spencer said.
He also adds that a price cut will be great for gamers because competition increases when prices go down, that’s what happened over the previous holiday season which resulted in record sales of gaming consoles, nothing is stopping history from repeating this year.
Sony will be present at the Paris Games Week in October, if it plans to cut PS4 price this holiday season perhaps it might make an announcement there.
