Both the new Nexus 5X and Nexus 6P handsets have been officially announced, but we’re sure many are curious as to why Google has chosen those names. After all following the naming scheme to date and based on the number of Nexus handsets that have been released to date, these two devices should be the seventh.
However to be fair, Google has also been naming them based on their screen sizes, so what’ with the “X” and “P” labels that follow the name? Speaking in a Reddit AMA, Google’s Hiroshi Lockheimer revealed what the names really meant. According to him, “X for the core of the Nexus brand (plus it sounds cool!), P for premium.”
Now prior to this, many had assumed the Nexus 5X was just a play on the Nexus 5 that was also made by LG, and that the X would denote that it would be a successor of sorts. As for the Nexus 6P, Huawei has released “P” handsets in the past so it had been assumed that maybe the P was simply a reference to Huawei being its OEM.
However we guess we now have our official answer! That being said, which Nexus handset do you plan on getting? Are you going for the core or would you prefer the premium Nexus instead?
