Apple announced the new iPhones yesterday and on the surface, they appear to be similar in shape and design as its predecessors. However it has been discovered that the new devices are thicker, albeit by 0.1-inches, and now it turns out that they are heavier than the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus as well.
According to the specs of the new iPhones, as pointed out by Richard Lai of Engadget, it seems that the difference in weight is actually pretty big. The iPhone 6s Plus weighs 192 gram, versus the iPhone 6 Plus which weighs 172 grams, a good 20 grams lighter. As for the iPhone 6s, it weighs 143 grams versus the iPhone 6’s 129 grams.
Now whether or not you can actually tell the difference in weight remains to be seen. Some people might be more sensitive to such things, while others might not even have realized that the phone was made heavier. Presumably this is thanks to the inclusion of new hardware in the phone, like the sensors used for 3D touch.
It probably also has to do with the use of aluminum 7000 series and the slightly stronger iox-x glass which makes it more durable than before. Is this a bad thing? We suppose if you want your phones as light as humanly possible, this seems to be going in the opposite direction. However we reckon Apple might be trying to avoid a second “bendgate” and a more durable iPhone does sound pretty appealing.
