If you have recently shopped at a Hilton gift shop or maybe eaten at one of their restaurants in the US, you might want to keep an eye out on your credit card activities. According to security researcher Brian Krebs (via Reuters), he alleges that Visa had alerted financial organizations to a potential breach at Hilton between the dates of 21st of April to the 27th of July.
While Hilton has yet to confirm that there has been a breach and customer information might have been misappropriated, they stated that they are looking into it. According to a Hilton spokesman, “Unfortunately the possibility of fraudulent credit card activity is all too common for every company in today’s marketplace. We take any potential issue very seriously, and we are looking into this matter.”
Assuming the hack is real and Hilton’s locations and franchises across the US have been compromised, this would be bad news for the company. Previous hacks such as the one on Target saw the breach of over 70 million customer names, phone numbers, emails, and more, a trust which would be pretty hard to earn back.
In any case like we said, Hilton hasn’t confirmed any breaches yet but in case you have been at any of those locations between those dates, keep an eye on your financial data just to be sure that there has not been any suspicious activities.
