As it stands there are read receipts in some of Facebook’s products and services, like Messenger and Groups to indicate when your message/post has been seen. However according to a report from The Daily Dot, it looks like Facebook will be taking their read receipts to the next level.
This will be done by applying it to more of Facebook’s own services, such as Events. What this means is that if someone has sent you an event invite that you have yet to respond to, they can tell if you have at the very least seen it. This gives the host a better idea of who has or has not actually seen the invite but has not yet responded.
According to a Facebook spokesperson, “We’re piloting the ability for private event hosts and guests to know whether their friends they invited have seen the event.” However as Facebook states, this feature is being piloted right now so there is a chance you might not see it for your event, or you might.
Read receipts have been seen as somewhat controversial as it could lead to misunderstandings. For example what if someone was too busy to reply but saw your message, does that make him/her rude? There was actually a big fuss kicked up when WhatsApp introduced their blue ticks, leading to a host of memes about how friendships would be ruined by these read receipts.
