While the jury is still out on virtual reality, Disney thinks it could be the next big thing. So much so that the company has recently invested a whopping $65 million in a company called Jaunt. For those unfamiliar with Jaunt, they are a company that specializes in creating cameras that can shoot video in 360-degrees, which is more or less a requirement for virtual reality content.
To date, the company has managed to raise over $100 million from a variety of investors and with the latest investment from Disney, the company states that they will use the money to advance its hardware and software. We’re not sure when we might be able to go to a cinema and enjoy a virtual reality experience, but it’s encouraging to see companies like Disney bet big on the future.
Disney’s optimism also seems to be in line with a recent analyst report in which it is expected that come 2020, there will be an estimated 30 million virtual reality headsets that would have been shipped.
