According to a report from The New York Times, Apple’s attempts at entering the video game market will be through the upcoming Apple TV refresh. Now the Apple TV has always been viewed as a set-top box to watch videos and movies and listen to music. However the report claims that the Cupertino company will be making games the primary selling point of the device.
It is not expected to compete against more dedicated consoles like the Xbox One, PlayStation 4, or the Wii U. Instead it is rumored to be more of a casual gaming device that anyone can just pick up and start playing straight away. Does this sound a bit ludicrous? Perhaps, but if you recall just last week there was a rumor that the Apple TV could support Bluetooth game controllers.
If this does not sound like a plan to appeal to gamers, we don’t know what is. Assuming this is true, chances are we could be looking at some specially-created games designed for the Apple TV in mind. Take it with a grain of salt for now, but check back with us on the 9th of September (this coming Wednesday) for the details.
