We had heard rumors that Microsoft might announce this feature for the Xbox One at Gamescom 2015 and the company has come through with the announcement. Microsoft has confirmed that the Xbox One DVR feature is going to be released in the coming year. The feature will provide users with full DVR functionality allowing them to schedule recordings on the go.
The announcement was made by Microsoft today as part of its Gamescom appearance, it did point out that the Xbox One DVR feature is going to be limited only to free-to-air TV.
Xbox One is already capable of controlling and viewing content from cable boxes through its HDMI-in port and the company has released digital TV tuners in the U.S. and Europe to provide access to free-to-air television stations.
Once the Xbox One is set up for free-to-air TV recording shows is as easy as plugging a USB hard drive into the console and recording the content. By recording content to an external drive there will be impact on gameplay activities or the ability to save to the console.
It will be possible for users to stream shows recorded on Xbox One to other devices through the Xbox app on Windows 10 or through SmartGlass for Android and iOS. Users will also be able to download their shows on a Windows 10 phone, PC or tablet to watch them without an internet connection.
There will be no limitation to the amount of TV that users can record with this feature, the only limitation will be the size of the hard drive that they plug in the Xbox One for this purpose. Microsoft says that it will release the Xbox One DVR feature as part of a future update in 2016.
