One of the upsides of buying a GSM-enabled smartphone is that you can generally use it in other countries while traveling, and it also makes it easy for you to switch between carriers such as AT&T and T-Mobile. Verizon on the other hand due to its use of CDMA means that sometimes trying to bring a non-Verizon phone onto the network can be difficult.
However as part of the company’s new strategy, which involves ditching contracts and subsidies, it seems that the carrier will now try to accommodate non-Verizon phones on its network moving forward. This was confirmed by the carrier to 9to5Mac in which they stated that starting this week, Nexus 6 and iPhone devices should be able to be activated on their network.
Verizon does note that these devices will need to be unlocked prior to its activation, so if they are still locked to your previous carrier, you will need to unlock it first. Also for now the only devices supported are the Nexus 6 and the iPhone, but we expect that other devices will be added in the future.
To see if your phone is compatible, just head on over to Verizon’s website and enter your device’s details, after which you can choose to continue using your existing SIM or purchase a new SIM card from Verizon’s stores, and then you should be good to go.
